    NFS CARBON : Reviews
    Monday, September 11, 2006

EA's venerable Need for Speed franchise has been around for quite a number of years now. Morphing most recently into a method of delivering some fairly stylish underground street racing, the last effort -- Need for Speed Most Wanted -- reintroduced the cop-chasing element with style. This time around, we're looking at the new Need for Speed Carbon, which is hitting a plethora of platforms in the fall, including the PS3 and 360. At the recent EA games event in Redwood Shores, I got to sit down and check out the 360 version first-hand, and was also privy to a brief glimpse of the work-in-progress PS3 version.

The core of the game revolves around you starting out at the bottom of the underground street racing pile. You'll need to cruise around a large city -- which is split up into multiple districts and a couple of new canyon courses -- and earn a name for yourself on the street. Along the way, you'll be able to form up your own "crew" of racers, which adds one of the new dynamics to the gameplay. There are initially three different types of crew members: mechanics, fabricators and fixers. As their names suggest, these guys can help out with upgrading your rides, tricking them out for appearance's sake and also getting you out of trouble with the local law enforcement agencies.

But the big hook in Need for Speed Carbon is the inclusion of the canyon duels. The area of the city known as Carbon Canyon is where the action is played out once your reputation is on the line. Getting out of the way of the cops, this perilous route is used by the denizens of the street racing lifestyle to settle beefs and win territory. One caveat though -- you might just lose everything you own if you take a nosedive over the side of one of the many hairpin turns. The stakes have never been this high before.

So as you attempt to take over more and more of the city blocks by participation in races, you'll be able to earn prize money and gain access to bigger and better rides. There are three distinct classes of cars to pick from. You've got your tuners, your muscle cars, and of course those delectable exotics too. EA has really pushed hard this time to make the in-game customization of the vehicles as varied as possible. Using a method coined as "autosculpting," players will have an unprecedented level of control over pretty much every aspect of the visual style of their rides.

The further you get into the game, the more levels of customization open up. It's pretty impressive to see this feature in action, and only when you see a demo of the game do you begin to realize the scope that autosculpting will provide. The other classic play mechanics are back in full effect including drafting, nitrous boosts, the speed breaker system and a few others too. The crew members can also be used in the actual races to help either hinder the CPU racers or assist you in getting to the front of the pack. They are called in to aid by the click of a joypad button, and it'll be interesting to see how these guys alter some of the more advanced tactical approaches from the previous games.

I played around with a straight-up eight-man circuit race, but found the one-on-one Carbon Canyon duel to be the most interesting aspect of the presentation. The duels work in the following manner. The first lap will see you trailing your opponent, trying to catch up and even overtake him. Fall too far behind and you lose. Crash over the edge of the course and you lose. All the time you are racing, you'll be accruing points. These points are then used in the second lap -- where you start in pole position -- and you need to hang on to them by beating out the enemy racer for a win. It's pretty nailbiting stuff.

But Need for Speed Carbon promises to offer a multitude of platforms some form of variety of gameplay based on the core 360 title. We're talking online multiplayer, offline multiplayer, and a lengthy and challenging single-player experience here. I would have liked to have seen a better frame rate in effect for Need for Speed Carbon too -- the likes of Burnout Revenge from Criterion has spoiled my inner graphics whore for racing games -- but hopefully that's something which is also being worked on. Overall, Need for Speed Carbon looks like it will shape up to be a solid entry into the EA racing franchise, and with a little love and attention, it could even be one of the better racers that we've seen so far over the past 12 or 18 months. Stay tuned for updates.

    Features:

  • Survive the Canyon: Leave the streets to battle rival bosses in the canyons outside the urban center. All-new Canyon Duel and Drift race modes are the ultimate test of skill and nerve, where one wrong turn could cost you more than the race.

  • The City Is Yours for the Taking: Race for control of the city block-by-block by taking down rival crews on their turf, then defeat their crew leaders in life-or-death races in Carbon Canyon.

  • Customize Your Dream Car: The revolutionary new Autosculptâ„¢ car customization tool gives you the power to design and morph your car in every way imaginable.

  • Represent a Class: Affiliate with the Tuner, American Muscle, or Exotic car classes and prove once and for all who makes the best set of wheels. A new physics model makes each car handle and drive differently.

  • Build Your Crew: Strategically choose your crew members and use their skills on the road and in your garage to help you win races and customize your cars. Designate any member of your crew as a wingman and trigger his special skill to knock out your rivals.

  • Over 50 Real-World Licensed Cars [confirm # is accurate]: Every car is tuneable so you can customize their look and performance to suit your crew.

' NFS Most Wanted ' Cheats
  • Cheat Codes

Enter one of the following codes at the main menu to activate the corresponding cheat function:

    Result Cheat Code
    Burger King Challengeburgerking
    Castrol Ford GTcastrol

  • Easy money

Find an easy race such as a drag or something short that you can win quickly. Win the race and get the money. Go back to the safe house and start the race again. Win the race to get the same amount of money again. Repeat this process as much as desired. This is quite useful when you need that extra bit of power to defeat a Blacklist Rival, but don't have the money for a better car or parts.

Defeat one of the opponents on the blacklist. You will get two marks to use on several different things. Do not use them on the Uniques early in the game. Instead, use them on the middle or the left "Random" choices. They should usually come out to either a large cash bonus or the opponent's pink slip.

  • Easy upgrades

Before you can do anything, you must win the Burger King Challenge. Once you win it, you will unlock all unique parts (also called Junkman parts). Get any car and put all the parts on it except performance. Once you have your car the way you desire, go to the performance shop. Max out your car, then put the Junkman parts on. Max out your car again. Then put on the Junkman parts again. Your car should be fully upgraded now.

  • Easy bounty

Get some cops to chase you, then go to the bus stop. Get on top of the buses and make sure that the front of the car is at the edge of the last bus so that the cops can see you and do not lose you. Keep looking behind you, because the cops will sometimes find a way on top of the buses. When they do get on the buses, just reverse as soon as you see them coming and push them off. Only one cop car will come on top of the bus. Do this for as long as desired. When you want to lose them, just reverse, park in the middle of the buses, and wait until your Cool Down bar fills. The cops will also drive crazy and crash into themselves, giving you extra bounty and bring up your rap sheet rankings on police vehicles immobilized and police vehicles involved.

  • Getting the most money when selling your car

When you sell a car, you will only get half of its list value; however, there is a trick that works well for Pinkslips that you have won and no longer want. Take your car to the shop, then go to the parts area. Go into the body kit, spoiler, hood, rims, and roof air areas and set everything to stock. When you check out, you will see anywhere from $1,000 to $18,000, depending on what Pinkslip car you are stripping. Do not try this with performance parts. The shop will charge you money for downgrading. Once you have stripped your car of all accessories, leave and go to your safe house. Sell the car, and you will have made a lot of money on the side. Do this every time you intend to sell any car.

  • Quick start

Get a perfect launch on your tachometer when launching from the start line to get a boost. When the needle turns blue drop the clutch and hold on.

  • Nitrous and grip

Hitting nitrous torques the chassis back, giving the rear tires immensely more weight under the new acceleration. The end effect is that you will go straight. If your tail is sliding out or you are about to spin out of control, hit your nitrous to get straighten out. This is a great trick in combination with Speedbreaker. With the correct timing, you can take most corners at any speed.

  • Nitrous boosting

It is critical when you get past Blacklist Member #6 to use your nitrous wisely and strategically. Instead of just holding Nitrous in desperation to get ahead, press and release it when the tachometer is about to shift to the next gear. Upon the next gear shift, continue pressing Nitrous until the next upcoming gear shift. This is a great way to cut time off your race.

  • Avoid and remove strikes

After getting busted and taking a strike, turn off the system the next time you get pulled over. Resume the game and those strikes will be removed.

  • Avoiding police

Go to the bus terminal with any Heat Level. Normally you would go left or right to take the jump or drive up the middle to take the shortcut. Instead of using the ramps to jump, stop at the apex of the ramp, then turn and drive in the middle of the walkway. Stop there and wait. The cops will not come up the ramp after you if you are in the middle of the walkway. No matter what the Heat Level, the cops will not get you and they will eventually drive away.

When completing a race, if the police radio in the car you are driving and you do not want to run from them, press Down and choose another race. Alternately, you may also jump to your safe house (must be done before you are seen or the pursuit begins). If not, you must drive to it yourself in Cool Down mode. To jump to the safe house, pause the game and press Right until seen. Additionally, upon reaching level 4 (Most Wanted) there will be a lot of police chasing you. At this level, cops are excellent at boxing you in. If you cannot move forward, use reverse for a couple of seconds to get away from the block; spin your car around and get out of there.

The best way to escape the police is to evade long enough to get into Cool Down mode, then find a hiding spot. By sticking to the cities you will find lots of Cool Down spots to sit and hide your car until the heat is off. This is also a good way to avoid helicopters which appear if your reach level 4 on your map. Another good method is to run into the triangles on your map, which mark places where you can ram into shops and other roadside items to disable the cops. Highways are good places to get blockades and strike strips which are challenges for milestones. Additionally, never respawn your car in a pursuit, as the police will always catch you.

An easy way to get away from cops at high wanted levels is to find the baseball field. Look on the map for a small triangle towards the top left. Use highways in a circle around the field to achieve your missions. Once you have gained enough bounty, city damage, roadblocks, etc., drive through an entrance to the baseball field, hitting the pursuit breaker on the way in. Make sure that you slow down some before hitting the breaker so that it does not send you through the other side of the field. Once you make it in the field, stay there and wait out the Cool Down period. The cops should be off of you and will not be able to find you. This works almost all the time to get rid of the cops. Just driving through random blockers rarely works when you are at wanted levels 4 and 5.

  • Levels of police action

The various levels of police action are as follows:

Heat Level 1: Marked patrol cars and cruisers. They mostly chase and try to run you off the road. If you have a quick car, they are not hard to get away from.

Heat Level 2: Unmarked patrol cars and cruisers, roadblocks. The police mainly try to ram you off the road and setup roadblocks. Avoid roadblocks by doing an emergency brake lock U-turn or go through them. You can get through by ramming the cars on either end of the roadblock or by going through a weak point like the sawhorse or a gap between the cars. Use Speedbreaker to see the weak point in the roadblocks and use nitrous to ram straight through. Some road blocks will not extend all the way across the road -- you can go through where they have not placed a car.

Heat Level 3: Marked GTO (Monaro) police cars, marked 4WDs (Rhinos), rolling road blocks, roadblocks. These are quicker and you need to use objects to knock down in front of them to disable them. Lead the chase with these vehicles through the cities to use knock down points (for example, the giant donut sign, etc.) to disable the vehicles and end the chase. Then, find somewhere to hide when you hit Cool Down mode. "Rhinos" will ram you from the front. Listen for the call over the police radio. You can usually see these coming on your map or on the road ahead. Depending on which car you have, you can get away with ramming them head on. Otherwise, just use Speedbreaker again to change lanes before they ram you.

Heat Level 4: Unmarked GTO (Monaro) police cars, helicopters, spike strips. The unmarked GTOs (Monaros) usually chase in packs and are very hard to avoid. They will try to box you in by surrounding the car from the front and back and slamming the brakes to take away any room you have to escape. Avoid this by staying ahead and using the same tactics used in level 3. For the helicopters, use tunnels and underground parking lots to escape from them. When they spot you, they can radio the police to your location. Spike strips are set up usually on main roads and highways. You can see them on the map when you see only one vehicle over to left of the road not driving (i.e., pulled over). Aim for the police car and use nitrous to ram it and get away. If you hit the spike strip you will get caught.

Heat Level 5: You will not reach this level until you are at Blacklist #3. When you reach this level, all the best and toughest police come out. The helicopters get more aggressive, there are more spikes, and more belts are called in on you. You must also deal with "cross" cop Corvettes. Cross and his team will apprehend you at all cost. Like in level 4, the unmarked GTO cars will surround and box you in and hit the brakes. Corvettes will also try to use rolling road blocks. If you reach level 5, make sure you are in your fastest vehicle. You will need the nitrous.

  • Higher Heat levels

You start Campaign mode only being able to achieve Heat levels 1 and 2 (City Police). By defeating certain Blacklist Rivals, you can then achieve the higher Heat levels:

Heat level 3 (State Police): Defeat the Blacklist Rival #13.
Heat level 4 (Undercover State Troopers): Defeat the Blacklist Rival #9.
Heat level 5 (Federal Authorities): Defeat the Blacklist Rival #5.
Heat level 6 (Cross' Street Racin' Unit): Defeat the Blacklist Rival #1 (final level only).
After you beat the Rockport's Most Wanted level, Heat level 5 will then consist of both the Federal Authorities and Cross' Street Racin' Unit.

  • Regaining control

When approaching a corner at a high speed, quickly assess whether or not you can get through it cleanly as fast as possible and without touching the inside or outside barriers. If you start drifting (or worse, careening out of control) toward a barrier, turn on your Speedbreaker in order to regain control via increased handling and traction. During this period of slowed time, straighten out your car and put it back into an ideal racing line. Once you are straight and driving in the correct direction, quickly turn off Speedbreaker and hit the Nitrous hard to rip out of the remainder of the corner.

  • Better car performance

After upgrading your car with engines, suspension, brakes, etc., pause the game and go to "Performance Tuning". For better handling for the Lamborghini, Porsche, Corvette, and Viper, set the "Height" of you car to "-1". If you need more gripping power either take the "Height" to "-2" or set the "Aerodynamics" to "+1". If you go overboard with the performance tuning options (anything past "+3" or "-3"), the car will actually handle worse.

  • Recommended car

The best start car to use until you get the Eclipse is the Cobalt SS. When you win blacklist races, try for the three "?" markers. You can get cash or the pink slip car. If you get their car, go to the safe house and sell it. You can get good money by doing this, and get unique upgrades after you start getting into the visuals (after you switch from the Cobalt). After you defeat Ming and get get his Lamborghini, it should make progressing further in the game easier. When you get his Lamborghini, go to the tuner shop and add in any upgrades needed for performance.

After beating Blacklist #8, you will have a choice to buy the Lotus Elise. At this point you should have enough money to buy it. If not, you may want sell to get enough money. Once you have the money, buy that car. It is great at road handling, and is very fast once you have maxed out its performance. Note: The stock top speed and handling do not look high at first.

  • Car upgrade test

If you are unsure which car is the best to use when upgraded, you can upgrade all the cars that are unlocked for free in the main menu. Go to "My Cars", select a car that is available, and upgrade it with the parts that are available. By doing this, you will not waste all your money in Career mode.

  • Blacklist cars

If you win the Pinkslips to a Blacklist car, you may want to use the Blacklist car as your own and make the necessary upgrades to performance, as most of the upgrades will have been already made by the Blacklist owner. You usually do not need to spend too much money to increase the performance, handling, etc. Sometimes these cars will have upgrades that have not been unlocked yet, but most of these are usually visual. Only do this if the vehicle you have won has better attributes than the one you are currently driving in its standard mode. You can check this out in the car shop. It is a good idea to keep about three to five nice quick cars in your safehouse.

  • Blacklist milestones

Blacklist milestones are things you need to do to rack up your bounty so you can challenge the next person on the Blacklist. Check these out so you know what you need to do to increase your points. Once the milestones are completed, you must work on increasing the points. The best way to do this is to cause as much major damage as possible by taking out police cars, traffic, and crashing through shops (for example, the donut shop and other places you will notice in the later levels). Try to rack up as much bounty and escape before your status has reached level 4. If your status is already level 4, then choose a different car for awhile until the status goes down before returning to your preferred car. Once your status hits level 4, it is harder to get into Cool Down mode to find somewhere to hide. Avoid getting caught, as you will lose the bounty you have racked up during the chase.

  • Blacklist cars

Defeat the indicated Blacklist Rival to win the corresponding car:

Aston Martin DB9: Blacklist Rival #7
      Audi A3 3.2 Quattro: Blacklist Rival #15
Audi A4 3.2 FSI Quattro: Blacklist Rival #14
Audi TT 3.2 Quattro: Blacklist Rival #15
BMW GTR (Race version): Blacklist Rival #1
      Cadillac CTS: Blacklist Rival #12
      Corvette C6: Blacklist Rival #5
Corvette C6.R: Complete 100% of the game
Dodge Viper SRT 10: Blacklist Rival #6
      Ford GT: Blacklist Rival #4

    NFS MOST WANTED : Reviews

EA's long-running Need for Speed series took a trip underground a couple of years back when the developer refocused the game solely on illegal street racing. While the nighttime racing series was certainly successful, the lawless world was always missing one key factor: cops. This year's installment crawls back into the daylight. The actual racing hasn't changed too much, but the
ever-present police make this game a whole lot more interesting.

The game's career mode starts out with a hilarious bang. You take
on the role of a nameless, faceless new racer attempting to hit the
scene in the city of Rockport. An underground ranking known as the
Blacklist governs who can race who, and when. You almost immediately
run into a punk named Razor, who's definitely the sort of dude that
lives his life a quarter-mile at a time. He's at the bottom of the list,
but a few races later, he's sabotaged your ride and has won it from
you in a race. Meanwhile, you're carted off to jail. Left with nothing
but some mysterious help from a stranger named Mia, your task is
to get back in the race game to work your way to the top of the Blacklist,
which is now topped by Razor, who's using your old car to wipe out the
    competition.

The game actually has a great story hook at the beginning that makes
you want to see the career mode through to completion. The early story
segments are told through some sort of unholy mixture of computer
-generated cars and full-motion video actors. The acting in these early
segments is awful...awful good, that is. You'll scratch your head and wonder
if these segments are intentionally bad and meant to be played for laughs
or if they're just unintentionally funny. Either way, they're great
. Unfortunately, after a brief prologue, you stop seeing video sequences,
and the story is conveyed via voicemails from various characters. Are you
a cop? Will you get to utter the magic street racing words, "Mia, I am a cop"?
Or is the plot twist even more painfully obvious than that? You'll have to
see the story through to find out where everyone's allegiances lie.

Working your way up the Blacklist is a multistep progress. Before you can
challenge the next Blacklist racer, you have to satisfy a list of requirements.
You'll have to win a set number of race events. And you'll have to reach a
set number of pursuit milestones and earn enough bounty by riling up the police.
The cops hate street racers and will give chase when they see you rolling
around the open city. You can also just jump right into a pursuit from a menu,
    too.

Running from the cops is the best action the game has to offer. Chases usually
start with just one car on your tail. But as you resist, you might find 20 cars
giving chase, in addition to a chopper flying overhead. Losing the cops gets
tougher as your heat level rises. Level one heat results in the appearance of
just your standard squad cars. But by the time you get up to level five, you'll
be dealing with roadblocks, spike strips, helicopters, and federal-driven Corvettes.
A meter at the bottom of the screen indicates how close you are to losing the
cops or getting busted. Stopping your car--or having it stopped for you by
spike strips or getting completely boxed in by cops--is how you'll get busted.
To actually get away, you'll need to get out of visual range...and stay there.
The initial evasion changes the meter over to a cooldown meter. You'll have
to lie low and wait for that meter to fill up to end the chase. This is probably
the tensest part of the entire chase, since you never know when two cops might
blow around the corner and spot you, starting the whole process over again.
It all sort of works like some sort of strange, wonderful cross between Grand
Theft Auto's open city and Metal Gear Solid's stealth mechanic. All the while,
you'll be acquiring heat on your car. This means that you'll have to keep a
couple of cars around, because acquiring heat on one car lowers the heat on
your other ones. Also, getting busted too many times can result in your car
getting impounded, though you can avoid that by resetting the system whenever
you get caught (if that's more your speed).

There's also a lot of racing in Most Wanted's career mode--almost too
much, in fact. You'll engage in multilap circuit races, point-A-to-point-B
sprint races, drag racing, checkpoint-driven tollbooth races, and speed
trap, where the winner is the player that accumulates the most speed while
passing by a handful of radar cameras spread throughout the track.
The races are solid but not spectacular. The artificial intelligence doesn't
really help things along, because most of the game is rubber-banded like
crazy. We actually set our controller down for 20 seconds--then picked it
back up and caught our opponents on the final lap. And though the AI will
occasionally crash and come to a complete halt, it'll catch up very, very
quickly. Later on in the game, you get a voicemail message informing you
that things are going to get tougher. At this point, the computer drivers
magically start taking every single shortcut, and the rubber banding only
seems to work against you. As a result, catching up after a mistake is
much tougher. If this difficulty had gradually sloped up, it wouldn't be a big
deal. But flipping the switch from "drive like crap" to "drive like a genius"
is really annoying. Fortunately, the racing action itself is entertaining enough
to keep you going, and of course, you'll be dying to find out what happens
    next in the story

    ' NFS Underground 2 ' Cheats
  • Original Need For Speed: Underground drift races

Win all Street X races to unlock the drift races from the original Need For Speed: Underground.

  • Winning an outrun

Once you have found an opponent to outrun with, get in front of the opponent and get in the lead. Get as far as possible until the distance meter has reached its limit. If the distance meter starts to drop, it indicates that the opponent is catching up. When this happens, do a handbrake skid and turn the car around. Go back the way that you came from. The opponent will follow you as you are the one in lead, but he will take time to catch up, giving you an advantage to win the outrun.

If you are in front of an opponent but cannot seem to lose him, head toward the center of the city (the area that has the five fountains). Once there, weave through the fountains. Your opponent will most likely crash into one of the fountains, giving you an easy win. Note: Practice going through the fountains first before you attempt an outrun so you do not lose your money. It is easier to do this in an SUV because it will not reach a high speed before you reach the fountains.

Find an outrun opponent then get right behind him. Draft him or her so that you can get a full tank of NOS, if desired. Then, start to spin out your opponent. You can do this by getting directly next to the car and turning into its back corner. While it is sideways or backwards, you can hit press Up to start the outrun. You will have a large head start because your opponent needs to turn around. You can win in under 15 seconds by doing this.

This trick requires that most of the city is unlocked. Get your car and get on the highway that leads around in a oval-like way. Challenge people on the highway for a much better chance of winning, since top speeds are better and there are less turns than the normal roads (so you do not slow down as much).

This trick requires a fast accelerating car. Drive to the airport where you first start the game, Next, find an opponent to race. While racing the opponent, make sure you get into the lead then go onto a little ramp the leads to a road just alongside the airport. After going down that road, you should be at an intersection where you can go left or straight. Take a left turn, then go straight down that road, which should be a parking lot. Once your opponent tries to catch up to you and gets close to the intersection, he will go straight instead of turning. This will give you a large lead and an easy win.

Start race with a full bar of nitrous. Come up from behind your opponent and draft until the nitrous is full, then do a tailspin maneuver. Do this by clipping the back bumper of your opponent, which sends them into the wall or in reverse. They will end up facing the wrong direction, giving you the advantage.

Find an opponent and draft behind them until you have full NOS (for backup, if you have at least a dryshot installed). When it is full, pull up next to them. Wait until you can challenge them, then start it. Then, ram your opponent at the rear tire. Keep pushing and to cause them to wipe out and stop, or crash into a wall. Then just drive off on a long straight road and use your saved up NOS. If you do not win it, you will at least have a very nice lead.

  • Winning Street X

In order to win Street X, you must take the turns wide at first then sharpen up your turns. This will help you add to your lead, and most likely you will win.

  • Easier turns in URL races

Notice that before the sharp turns during the URL races, there are a set of numbers that countdown to 1. Follow those numbers to perfect your sharp turn into a groove to speed through faster. Keep accelerating until you reach "1", then slam on the brakes and turn. Once perfected, this can help you get through the turns with more speed. Additionally, in URL races, the CPU will try to spin you a lot. Whenever your car slides to an 30 to 60 degree angle, use your NOS and turn.

Some turns in URL races do not require brakes. Notice that the angles of some of the turns are kind of rounded. If you have the speed, you could go right into the wall and make the turn. As long as you are going about 130 mph and hit these certain corners, you will only go down to 100 mph or so. You have to experiment with the turns. Sometimes you will go too fast and flip, and other times you will fly through the turns going 100 mph while the CPU cars slow down, giving you some cushion time. Remember, you must get up against the wall for this trick to work.

In the first few laps, you will most likely be behind someone. When you are going on a turn, they will probably slow down. This is where you can turn the tables on the entire race. Do not slow down. Instead, keep going and use him as a wall to get the inside of the turn without applying the brake. As a bonus you may also get him to stop in an attempt to shake you, but this will only result in getting you a good lead. Note: You must make sure he does not ram you into the wall.

  • Finding hidden shops

Look at road signs around the city. They often have colored shapes (yellow triangles, etc.) to guide the way to the shops. Also, look for street-lights casting a colored glow. This indicates that there is a shop very close.

  • Finding more races

If you cannot find any more races on your map, then you need to find all the hidden shops in the city. After you find all the shops, you will be asked to be on another DVD cover. Follow the star to get to the next level.

  • Easy NOS recovery

When you are on the ground, activate hydros and keep flicking the Left Analog-stick Left repeatedly to get lots of points for filling your NOS bar. You can also do about three donuts, then wait and do another three donuts.

Get on the highway and drive in reverse. After a few seconds you should begin racking up points on the right side of your screen. These points will give you extra NOS. Note: Crashing into traffic at high speeds will reduce your NOS.

If you run out of NOS in free roam mode, pause the game and select "Jump To Garage". As soon as you can, exit garage mode and you should have full NOS. Note: This only fills up the first tank.

Use the following trick to get extra NOS at the beginning of a race. When the girls are up front waving their hands, tap NOS to perform a "spray show". This should give you a little extra NOS.

Go to any shop. Enter the shop, then leave it. You will have a full tank of NOS. You can also recover NOS by doing one of the following things:

      Sprayshow: Purge your nitrous.
Traffic Hit: Penalty from hitting traffic.
Lead Lap: Lead a lap in the race.
Clean Section: Make it through an entire race section without hitting anything.
Clean Lap: Make it through an entire lap without hitting anything.
      Shortcut: Take a shortcut.
Avoid Accident: Almost get in a wreck with another car.
      360: Perform a 360 or a doughnut while driving.
Best Lap: Score a best lap during a race.
Head Start: Get off the starting line the quickest.
J Turn: Drive in reverse and swing the car around to drive away forwards.
      Burnout: Spin the tires.
Leap Frog: Jump your car over a traffic accident.
Hydro Bounce: Bounce your car using level 3 hydraulics.

  • Easy money

In the career mode menu, go to the world map. Select any race that has not been completed in any stage. Once the race has started, pause game play and restart. After you have won the race, a screen will appear showing you how many reputation points and how much bank you have won. You will then go to the menu that asks if you want to return to explore mode, restart, etc. When this appears choose "Return To Main Menu". You do not have to save the game. Then, just go back into the career menu and select the "World Map" option again. Choose another race that has not been completed and start it. If done correctly, all of the races in the world map will be against three Toyota Corollas or a mixture of Hummers, Escalades and Navigators. If you restart these races, you will always get money if you win.

Collecting the little information logos around the city gives you money. You will receive $25 for each one. Additionally, listen to the other racers that periodically talk to you. They will say a general location in the city where you can find hidden races not shown on the map that are worth $850 instead of the usual $300.

As soon as you start the game, ignore Rachel's request to go to the car lot. Instead, try to collect as many information icons as possible. This will give you that little extra money to start modding your car, and will save time as you do not have to look for them in your initially slow car. Also, enter the two races shown on your GPS (circuit and sprint races). Going in these two races will give you at least 500 points in the bank. You should receive a message to get to the car lot now. Do so, and continue playing the game.

Enter career mode and go down to the Burger King and Best Buy area. Drive around and look for a stone wall and alley by the town shops. Go into the alley and turn sharply to the right. There will be a parking lot where an opponent will be sitting. He will not be appear on your navigation map, nor will you. You can challenge this opponent to an easy outrun. He will always drive towards the stadium. After you beat him, return to the parking lot where two red info messages will appear. Get them for $25 each. After you collect them, go into a garage, shop, etc., and save the game. Then, go back to the parking lot. Five green money bags will be there. Collect them, jump to the garage (on the main menu screen) and return for five more. This will get you money much easier than racing.

In career mode, eventually you will get sponsored and there will be purple crosses on the map. If you go to them, they are usually a sponsored circuit race. If you win them, you will get $900.

When you start with Rachel's car, do not take it back immediately. Instead, do some outruns and races to get money. You will then have a boost of money when you get your own car.

  • Easy style points

To do this, you will need at least level 1 hydraulics. Drive up against a wall and activate your hydraulics. Then, press the Gas and stay up against the wall. You may need to turn sometimes to keep it straight. You should start to get points on the right side of your screen. Additionally, driving in reverse will give you style points. The longer you drive in reverse, the more points you will receive.

  • Easy wins

When racing for magazine covers, unique performance or visual parts, it helps if you have both NOS bottles filled. This can help you beat that tenth of a second that you have always missed. It also helps, especially in the more difficult and longer stages, with small time limits, to immediately activate the GPS as soon as you have accepted the challenge.

  • Easy drag race wins

Instead of using nitrous by holding it down and wasting it all at once, just keep tapping NOS as fast as you can. You will gain 1 to 3 mph with every tap, which is actually increases your speed faster than if you were to hold it down. Also, you will run out of it about one third as fast. Try this on the hardest difficulty setting.

  • Get bank for races

There are five stages, and as you complete each of them you can go back and repeat the races again. You may even find that there are some races you missed. These are the ones that you want to race. When you go to these, you are not supposed to get anything for them but you can change that. To access these races, go to your garage, then your world map, and select a race. When the race begins, pause game play and restart the race. Notice that there is an option to return to world map, however after you restart it will not be there. You can now race and get bank for it.

  • Drift mode

In drift mode, set your car up using the following this basic structure. Tune the ECU to have as much torque as you can get in the early gears. Make all of the suspension settings as hard as possible to eliminate shock travel. This will help get the back end out. Turn the tire grip to weak. Also, make the cars acceleration as quick as possible. For the toe settings, lower it all the way. Make the aero settings as weak as possible. Set the brake bias towards rear. By doing this, you will greatly increase your score, especially on the downhill. On the straight-aways you can do Choku-Doris (go from side to side) to rack up big points. You can then link them to power over-steer drifts, which is when you will use the torque and acceleration to lose traction in the back tires, then use carefully timed throttle control to get around the corner as sideways as possible. This will help your drifts scores get as high as possible. Throttle control is very important -- do not get discouraged if you spin out a lot. Note: This has not been attempted on FF or AWD cars. FF and AWD cars will most likely have a softer suspension setting but everything else would probably remain the same. FF and AWD cars also need the hand brake to initiate drifts more than a FR car would.

  • Easy drift points

Some of the downhill drift races have houses with looping drive ways that you can drive in. Drifting in these driveways gets a lot more points than on the street because you are so far off the road and are not hitting a wall.

Go into Quick Race mode and select the Subaru Impreza with all extreme or level 3 performance parts. You may style the visual as desired, Then, choose Drift Track 6 and 10 laps with easy opponents. Drive through the middle of the track. When you are just before a corner, press the handbrake. Release it after you have slightly slid. Your car will soon almost spin and will drift through easily. Continue through the rest of the track by swerving on the straights and using the handbrake properly on the corners. You can get about 50,000 to 500,000 drift points at the end of the race.

  • Final race

The final race is against Caleb (the man that tells Nikki to win, then she loses and joins your team) on a 4.5 mile track and 5 laps. However, he only gets up to about 130 mph.

  • Lift tire off ground

To get a left rear tire off the ground, go to "Customize Car" and put hydraulics on the Pontiac GTO. Go to free ride mode and put the rear of the car off the ground with the hydraulics. Then, push the gas and hit the brakes. The left rear of the car will comes off the ground. Note: You must have the level 2 brakes.

  • Get car on either side of the wheels

This trick requires all of the level 2 upgrades, and hydraulics upgrade level 2. Get the hydraulics to either side of the car, and only that one side. Then, do a donut to the right if the left side of the car is lifted and vice versa. This only happens for a moment.

  • Endo

Get any car and put level 3 hydraulics on it. Put on level 3 brakes. You can also use all level 3 engine parts to make it go higher. First, put the rear end up. Then, bounce the back. Next, go about 17 mph (or faster) and hit the brake. If done correctly, you could have the entire back end of the car straight up.

  • Avoid spins with Mustang GT

In career mode when you unlock The Mustang GT, be careful when you put in the top engine with the top ECU. When going fast, watch out for sharp turns. You might spin out in a race; try to work on your handling.

  • Fast career car

Use the following trick to create an extremely fast and high starred car quickly. When you start career mode, choose a Peugeot 106. Try not to get any upgrades unless you need them. Keep winning races and playing through the game until you unlock the Toyota Celica This can be made into the fastest car in the game. Get it immediately when it is unlocked. This should be sometime in level 2. Play through the game, making sure to take the opportunity to do of any outruns. This will unlock unique upgrades. When you unlock the unique part, you will have to go to a star on the map first. The game will tell you to go to a certain shop, depending on what the unique is. The first one is a unique hood. You must win four outruns for it. Then in stage 3, you need will need three outrun wins for a unique engine, transmission, or tire set. Choose the engine. For unique rims , get six wins in stage 3. The spoilers require four wins on stage 4. The vinyls require six wins on stage 4. The ECU, turbo or brakes require nine wins on stage 4. Select the ECU. The NOS, weight or suspension uniques require six wins on stage 5. Select NOS for an extra long boost. Finally, the wide body kits uniques require eleven wins on stage 5. Put all of these on your Celica, and it will be the fastest car in the game. Note: Do not forget to install the performance upgrades up to level 3.

  • More horsepower and torque

To add more horsepower and torque, go to "Customize", then tune a car up to level 3 parts. Then, go to "Performance Tune/Dyno". Choose for example, "Drag", then go to "Tune Settings". Go to "ECU" and set it so that from 5 rpm to 9 rpm or whatever is the most the maximum amount of torque you can add. Do the same for "Turbo". Then. go to "Nitrous" and set the duration to 4 seconds. This will add both torque and horsepower to your ride.

  • Carbon fiber the entire car

Carbon your body kit, then put a wide body kit on it. The entire wide body will be carbon fiber. This will also give you a wider wheel base and should result in a lighter car.

  • Recommended cars

One of the best cars in the game is the Toyota Corolla. Once you obtain all level three performance upgrades, you can go online and sup it up. Add whatever desired, including all level three upgrades then go to tuning and set it to drag so that it can take off the line quicker. Then, lower the suspension to the lowest setting. You should now have a car that can beat Celicas and Skylines, and will take off the line faster.

After unlocking all level three performance parts, get a Nissan 240SX and put all of the performance parts on it. If you go online with this car (with performance parts on the car) and get mostly perfect shifts during a drag, you should be able to beat all other car (excluding other 240SX's). If you want to go even faster, you will have to edit the settings of your car on the dyno run.

To get a fast Nissan Skyline that goes up to 227 to -228 on the airport freeway drag race, install all performance parts except for the six speed transmission. If you install the six speed transmission, you will get better acceleration but less top speed.

  • Jump off a car

To jump off a car's hood, you must first jump off an uphill road the other way that the car is traveling. Use your NOS, get some air, and when the car approaches, get on its hood, off its windshield, then into the air.

    NFS UNDERGROUND 2 : Reviews

Last year, EA took its long-running Need for Speed series in an exciting new direction with the release of Need for Speed Underground, a racing game that focused on making the import tuner scene the star of its arcade-style racing show. The game worked really well, combining the right level of car customization with good track design, challenging opponents, and impressive graphical effects. Now, one year later, a sequel is on the streets, adding some new race types and a big, open city to cruise around. The actual racing in Need for Speed Underground 2
is still pretty good, but unfortunately most of the stuff you do in between races keeps you away from the game's best moments.

Need for Speed Underground 2 tries to inject a story into your career mode using static-image cutscenes that pop up before some races. The effect is similar to what the Max Payne series does with its noninteractive sequences, though that game pulls it off much better than Need for Speed Underground 2 does. Dopey
story short, you're sent off to a new town after getting ambushed by a rival racing crew, and you'll have to start from scratch with one car and a handful of races to get you going.

The biggest change made by this year's game is that the action now takes place in one large city. You're given free rein to drive around wherever you want, and you'll have to drive to races to drive in them. You'll also have to drive to different parts shops to customize your ride--in fact, you'll have to find most of the game's shops by cruising around the city, looking for the right type of colored lights. The game gives you an onscreen map, but shops don't show up until you've found them, and some races don't actually appear on the map, either.

On paper, this whole open-city thing sounds like an interesting idea. Someone probably sat down and said, "Well, everyone likes Grand Theft Auto, and it has an open city, so our game has to have an open city as well. In fact, let's even make it so that different sections of the city are locked away until you progress to a certain point in the career mode." In practice, driving around the city is a realdrag that keeps you out of the action longer than you'd like. The game also rarely takes advantage of the open city for racing purposes, staging a majority of its
events on preset tracks, rather than attempting to go for a Midnight Club-like "get there however you can" feel. There's a menu in the garage that lets you jump to a handful of different events, but most races don't show up here, and none of the shops do, either, making it completely useless.

You'll start out in some pretty slow cars, so the racing isn't very exciting until you earn enough for a full set of upgraded performance parts. But once you've done so, the racing is fun and the cars handle well. The cars are fast, and things like turning, powersliding, and proper corning technique are easy to pick-up. Like in last year's game, there are a handful of different race types: Circuit races are long lap-based events, sprints take you from point A to point B on a set course, drag racing lets you live your life a quarter mile at a time, and drift races rank you based on how squirrelly you can get on the track. New in this year's game are the street X races, which are essentially regular races that take place on drift tracks. Outrun races take place in various parts of the city
--you roll up behind another racer, tap a button, and then try to pass and outrun him or her. You'll also encounter a few races against the clock, in which you'll have to get from one point in the city to another before a photographer leaves the area. Make it, and you'll get to put your car on the cover of one of the game's
magazines or DVDs for extra cash. The big new race type is the "underground racing league." These races are the sort of mysterious events where you'll see most of the game's cutscenes. They mostly involve some knucklehead breaking the lock on a race track and then swinging open a gate so your street-racing posse can race on a "real" track, though you'll also bust into airports and such, too. These races are essentially circuit races with racetrack scenery instead of cityscape scenery.

Though there are three different difficulty settings for the career mode, none of them put up a particularly good fight. As a result, most of the races simply boil down to getting in front of the opposition and then doing what you can to not make a mistake. Between nitrous boosts and drafting, gaining the lead isn't very difficult, and the game doesn't seem to employ any heavy rubber-band AI routines to retake the lead from you, so you can usually stay in front without
any trouble at all. When you consider that it will take you about a minute to get in front, and that some of the circuit races can last six minutes or more, this means that a great deal of your race time is spent just cruising along, dodging traffic and not paying any attention to the other cars unless you screw up and get into a wreck. In the event that you do crash, regaining the lead usually isn't too tough, especially if you've purchased a nitrous-oxide upgrade, which shamelessly lifts concepts from the Burnout series, translating powerslides and near-misses into extra boost for your tank. The opposing cars will slow down quite a bit if they take a big lead, making them very easy to beat.

Need for Speed Underground 2's crashes are laughably weak. While high-speed collisions with other cars trigger a slow-motion, cinematic shot of the crash, the game doesn't model any damage at all. It's like you're watching two plastic car models bump up against each other, accompanied by the sounds of an actual car crash. While it practically goes without saying that modeling damage in a game with licensed cars is still a tricky proposition, that fact doesn't make these wrecks look any better. Fortunately, the game's car customization features somewhat make up for this lack of visual detail.

    Cheat: Bigger/Smaller Rims
It is possible to put bigger/smaller rims on cars, because the size in inches changes from car to car, e.g. the Honda civic level 3 rims are 19", the Mazda rx7 level 3 are 20", etc.

Install the rims you like on the car you have. Then, trade your car in for a car that has rims of that level bigger or smaller than your car. Return to the rim customization screen and pick the same rims on that car. Although they already are installed, you must reinstall them for the game to register the size change. Clicking on next will simply ask you if you want to install the rims, although they already are, say yes. Then, go and trade your car back for what you had and it will keep the rim size you put on. On some cars, bigger rims will make them go through the fenders.

    Hint: Easy Drag Races
Having a hard time completing a drag race? Strip your car of every performance upgrade except handling and brakes. Your opponents will automatically do the same thing. This makes it easier to make a perfect shift everytime. This will work in all races except the ones that say you have to have a fast car.

    Hint: Flip Cars
First "draft" a car until your front bumper touches the opponent's rear bumper, then hit the Nitrous and your opponent's car will be flipped.

Hint: Points for 360 in Drift
When you are in drift mode you can get some extra points for doing doughnuts. Hold one direction and the handbrake and gas and let go of the handbrake after a second. You'll just sit there and do doughnuts. This won't get you massive points but it's something.

    NFS UNDERGROUND : Reviews

Only a year gone and Electronic Arts is already burning rubber with another Need for Speed - Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, a fantastic racer on the PlayStation 2, but one not quite as polished on other platforms. Since developer Black Box was responsible for the slick PS2 iteration, EA recruited them to develop the next in the franchise.

Aptly titled Need for Speed Underground, it focuses on the custom kit and import car circuit. It is most commonly, and certainly not unfairly, compared to the theme featured in the popular The Fast and the Furious movies. So, it is a definite departure from the world of exotic cars and over-the-top police chases that the series was founded on. It broadens the NFS

It's a world of gorgeous girls, rocket-fast racing, stunning graphics, and some of the most impressive vehicle customization ever created. Yes, we'd be crazy not to like it -- and so would you.

    Gameplay
Need for Speed Underground borrows, instead of simulating, from the increasingly popular custom kit and import car scene. The days when Dodge Neons, VW Golfs, Subaru Imprezas and Mazda Miatas were just reminders you couldn't have a flashy sports car are gone; in the ever-growing circle of elite street racers, dedicated auto fanatics are turning the mid-range class of almost-sports-cars into decked out, eye-catching street rockets. The underground scene of backstreet, nighttime racers has evolved into a whole new industry. Companies like AEM, Enkei, Jackson Racing, HKS, and StreetGlow provide lines of custom upgrades for otherwise everyday cars -- like the Impreza -- so you can deck them out and turn them into your personalized street machine.

Black Box and EA have gone to great measures to capture this gritty, sometimes seedy underworld, partnering with the biggest product lines and major car manufacturers. It seems its goal was to create a racer that provided more vehicle customization than anything ever seen before, and to this extent it succeeded brilliantly. The flexible car customization mode offers up 20 different vehicles, not a huge number, but with all the different options the variety of personalized cars you can create is in the billions, according to EA. These "Customize Your Ride" options take center stage of the gameplay. Underground's single-player mode is intimately tied into unlocking new parts for your car -- both of the performance increasing and aesthetic variety.

Last year the publisher released franchise, bringing a number of things to the starting line that other arcade racers have not. More than anything, it features a robust customization mode that is intricately sewn into a lengthy franchise-style single-player experience.

The total gameplay experience is tuned into the 111-objective "Underground" mode. Like a story, it unfolds as your challengers message you via your in-car video display. There are a few FMV sequences now and then, but mostly it is just audio clips and animated heads that deliver your objectives. It works perfectly, however, and is presented seamlessly. To diversify gameplay from just being regular racing as we've seen it before, Black Box crafted a number of different race types -- essentially you have Race, Drift, and Drag. Race is actually broken up into a number of styles, including point-to-point (one long stretch of a track), circuit (multi-lap), and knockout (cars in last place are booted each lap; last car across the line wins). So, there's a respectable variety to mix up Underground's story mode.

It melds flawlessly with the theme and does a brilliant job of immersing you in the "Underground" world. Drag and Drift add a great deal of depth, too, because the physics and driving rules have been tweaked so much that they practically stand on their own. No racers have offered up such a complete, story-driven package. Set up almost like chapters, you usually hopscotch between the different styles of racing, then rinse and repeat. It's a bit formulaic in that way, but it works pretty well. Over the 111 objectives there are special challenges and rewards, like one-on-one challenges to increase your "Underground" ranking on the charts, magazine covers are earned often -- a very cool feature, and more often are new parts and body kits unlocked.

The racing mechanics themselves are all finely tuned, as they so often are in the NFS games, kind of realistically heavy but still adhering to a flexible arcade style. Deadly quick would also describe the sensation of speed. Part of this is thanks to the graphical prowess, but the pace of the tracks is balanced intelligently with the cars' top speeds. Black Box has cleverly integrated some of the elements Criterion's Burnout series introduced like points for near misses, drifts around corners, and overall your style of driving. Based on your performance you accumulate style points, which are basically experience points that earn you new custom parts, the aforementioned magazine covers, and even special pre-made top-end vehicles for use in the "Quick Race" arcade mode. It really is a nicely balanced and tightly wound single-player mode thanks to all these special touches.

For actual racing, traffic becomes an issue as you progress through Underground, which helps to heighten the intensity of racing, but at the same time it can become frustrating. You can't predict traffic and sometimes reaction skills simply won't save you. In a way this takes away from demonstrating your pure driving skills against the AI, which is bothersome at times. But, it forces you to be very cautious around corners later in the game -- petal to the metal simply won't apply. Fortunately, the CPU drivers are programmed extremely well. They fall victim to the same mistakes of nailing traffic head-on and when you try to take them on side-by-side they display aggressiveness. This is another area Black Box balanced well; if you make some mistakes by hitting traffic they won't blow you out of the water and take an uncompromising lead. It also adds to the realism. Many times have we trailed a lead car around the last corner only to see their car take a hit from oncoming traffic and go flying. This adds an intense amount of satisfaction to the racing. In other words, physically, the racing feels great; running AI off the roads, skillfully cutting corners, finding the shortcuts, and driving with some style is all very rewarding most of the time.

The motivation to play Need for Speed Underground, then, is to create the ultimate ride. You get satisfaction from winning races, but there are a few reasons it can become redundant. Firstly, you don't actually tune your car -- there is no setting gear ratios, traction, or anything of the sort that requires of choice. You unlock three levels of engines, turbos, nitro, transmissions, and so on. This is where the "Customize Your Ride" lacks a bit of oomph. No skill or decision making is required. Things like a new Nitrous package (one of the three levels) unlock when you complete a certain one of the 111-objectives. We were disappointed to discover this. It may make the gameplay easier to figure out, but given the incredible amount of aesthetic improvements we were really hoping that tuning would be a highlight of the gameplay. After all, a highlight of modifying these vehicles is being different.

So, by creating the ultimate ride we mean unlocking level-three parts of everything that makes your car faster and better to handle and then designing the aesthetics to your heart's content. Need for Speed Underground focuses sharply on this element, and it is honestly the biggest reason to play. The sheer amount of options is insane, and the implementation is staggering. We started with a crappy green Dodge Neon. It was slow, embarrassing to look at, and just flatly pitiful. But by investing several hours into the "Underground" mode we progressed through the three levels of body enhancements. The only difference with its three-level format is that is it not limited -- when you, say, reach level two of spoilers there are a handful of them and not just one. So it doesn't suffer from the predictability of the engine enhancements. Back to the point, within a few hours of improving our driving skills and proving them, we began to create an incredible looking vehicle. Our Dodge Neon was but a fading memory -- this was a prize, high-octane ride. We got it on covers of magazines, changed the paint jobs and vinyls; began to have a history of cars we once drove. This is why you play -- to be you and to create a truly custom ride that you probably couldn't afford in real life.

But there is a downside. The entirety of the experience is based entirely on wet, downtown metropolitan tracks. It's all bright lights, brick walls, and city traffic. This can make the "Underground" mode monotonous. And because racing can become monotonous, the quest to unlock all the awesome parts and create your stylin' ride is really difficult. We're completely fine with having to work to craft a dazzling ride, but the track designs, which often intersect, reverse, and overlap is not enough. We would have rather seen "Underground" mode travel the world -- race in the streets of Barcelona, Tokyo, some exotic areas that show actual daylight. Hell, the addition of a real-time weather system and time system, where you saw the sun rise or set, would have made Underground near perfect.

Maybe it's unrealistic to think any company could create so much only a year after the release of the last product, but the point is there is still some room for Need for Speed Underground to grow. Replays are another example of what's missing. For a racer, this puts a big dent in gameplay.Perhaps we'll see a NFSU Underground Vol. 2 that will broaden the experience. Whatever the case, this is one of the best racers of the year and its customization innovations make it worth owning this holiday season.

If you're into the multiplayer scene, Need for Speed Underground is only two-player on all the platforms (if you don't take it online) and allows you to participate in all three styles of racing, including the fresh new Drag and Drift modes. There's an unfortunate catch, however: you cannot haul your customized ride over to a friend's house on a memory card and boot it up to go head-to-head. You both will only have access to the cars that are unlocked with the main profile. Only the online players get to tout their custom rides in multiplayer, it seems.

Despite some of the lacking variety or other things that are easy to nitpick over, Need for Speed Underground still comes highly recommended.
